When paper is not enough
When paper no longer fulfils the requirements of the end product, synthetic materials step in. For example, nautical and hiking maps need to be water and tear resistant, identity cards and documents need to be particularly resistant to ageing, and service cards or tool catalogues need to survive oil and chemicals. No one wants to lose their wristband at a music festival or their race number when they cross the finish line of a marathon.
